UNESCO Niumi Bioshere Reserve is established

On 5 July 2024, the Niumi Biosphere Reserve was officially designated as part of the prestigious World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB). This marks a historic milestone as The Gambia’s first-ever biosphere reserve.

The official inauguration took place on 15 January 2025 in Kerewan, celebrating years of dedicated collaboration between The Gambia and the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. This achievement represents a significant step forward in conservation efforts and stands as a major milestone for the LIFE Godwit Flyway project, reinforcing the commitment to protecting vital ecosystems for migratory birds.
